The "Summer School" is an annual 5-day intensive coaching program for youth and young adults who have already acquired basic skills on their instrument and would like to improve their playing in pop and jazz music.
Organized by the Landesmusikakademie RLP in close cooperation with the Jazz Campus Mainz, it is aimed at two target groups. On the one hand, young people who already have a basic command of their instrument, but who have not yet had any major contact with the topics of improvisation and ensemble playing in a jazz combo and would like to gain experience and input here. On the other hand, ambitious young jazz musicians who would like to prepare themselves specifically for an entrance examination at a music academy. Accordingly, some of the modules are designed in two selectable levels of difficulty.
The following modules are included in a compact 5-day course program:
Instruction on the instrument in masterclass format (10 hrs. in total),
Combo coaching either in basic or advanced level (8 hrs. in total)
Input in various jazz theory subjects optionally in Basic or Advanced Level (8 hrs. in total).
Input in practicing and improvisation concepts (4 hrs. in total).
The instructors are all renowned musicians from the university environment. Thus, participants will meet various professionals who will also be happy to answer questions about their studies or professional life as a musician.
In addition to the courses, there is the possibility for evening jam sessions with the other course participants from both workshop levels and musicians from the Mainz scene.
An optional entrance exam simulation with feedback for all those who are considering studying rounds off the program.
Young musicians from Rhineland-Palatinate and beyond who play piano, bass, guitar, drums, saxophone, trumpet or trombone or have chosen singing as their instrument are addressed.
The number of participants is limited to 32 (max. 8 participants per instrument). The lecturers of the Summer School are all renowned personalities from the university environment.
In addition to the "Summer School" as a central program for the promotion of the general public and young musicians, further multiplier programs are planned in the long term, such as further training for teachers in jazz education, etc.
