Public events take place regularly at the Landesmusikakademie, which are mainly the result of the work of individual courses or groups of students. In most cases, these are course graduations or public dress rehearsals with free admission. Here you will find an overview of the events that will take place in the near future.
Play and Repeat??! Days of piano improvisation
Final concert in the auditorium of the Heinrich-Haus
Play & Repeat??! Piano improvisation daysFinal concert by the participants
For the seventh time, pianists - students, professionals and committed amateur musicians - meet at the Landesmusikakademie to deepen their practice in the field of improvisation.
The four lecturers Sebastian Sternal, Christopher Miltenberger, Helmut Lörscher and Laurens Patzlaff are professors at the music schools in Mainz, Freiburg and Lübeck. They are among the most internationally renowned specialists in piano improvisation and each pursue individual approaches to improvisation, with which they have made an outstanding name not only in the field of jazz.
“... the ear does not like to be satisfied with what it has already suspected in advance, but always wants to be deceived.” (Joachim Quantz, 1752)
Improvising on jazz standards, folk songs and pop songs is one of the most important skills of music teachers nowadays. Improvisation is also playing an increasingly important role in instrumental lessons. The course is aimed at all those who want to deepen their knowledge of piano improvisation and at the same time break new ground in traditional ways. Variation and renewal of known musical patterns of all kinds is the focus of the course work.

The Invention of Romanticism - Music Days on the Rhine
Mainz Virtuosi & Friends in the Marktkirche Neuwied
Programme:
Franz Schubert Rondo in A major, D.438
Ludwig van Beethoven Violin Concerto in D major, Op.61
Ludwig van Beethoven's compositions, such as the Ninth Symphony, tell epic stories from beginning to end. His contribution to the development of the Romantic style is particularly evident in his ability to create narrative plots within symphonic works. His music became a powerful narrative that traversed emotional highs and lows, laying the foundation for the Romantic understanding of music as a means of depicting stories and feelings
In his compositions, Franz Schubert experimented with rich, nuanced harmonies that created new soundscapes. Schubert also introduced the genre of the fairy tale into music. Schubert gave his works a narrative quality, bringing stories of love, loss and experiences of nature to life with the help of lyrical texts.
These innovations enriched the Romantic musical landscape and influenced numerous composers after them.

Free Voices - Gospels and more
in the church of St Martin Engers
The gospel choir Free Voices e.V. Schillingen was founded in 1996 in a rather unconventional way. In the absence of a gospel choir in the region around Schillingen, Günter Blatt agreed to start a project that he himself was initially not convinced would be successful. After a first successful rehearsal, he founded Free Voices with 15 ladies who were keen to sing. After a short time and the first musical successes, the choir was enlarged by numerous singers.
For more than 25 years, the Free Voices, which now has over 50 singers, has become a permanent fixture in the region. It is remarkable that singers, even the choirmaster, travel up to 65 kilometres to sing in this choir or to conduct it. The addition "Gospels and more" means that the choir is primarily dedicated to gospel music, but also likes to include pop songs and modern church songs in its repertoire.
Patrick Jungels, whose enthusiasm for choral music was awakened and encouraged by Günter Blatt, has been the choirmaster of Free Voices since 2015. Patrick Jungels studied music education at the University of Koblenz-Landau, specialising in singing and piano as well as German studies. He attended choral conducting seminars with Werner Ciba and university music director Ron Dirk Entleutner, among others. He supplemented his training with workshops (e.g. with Carsten Gerlitz) and choral experience in pop and jazz. He also took part in several workshops at the Landesmusikakademie Engers. With this experience, the choir still fulfils the original requirements today: high motivation, (choral) voice training, a broad spectrum of literature and a visible joy in making music.

SAGO - The Songwriting School
in the garden hall of Engers Castle
Trusting in the long-term impact of art, even if the market favours quick results - that is the message of SAGO, the Academy for Poetry and Music. It was founded in 1989 by Christof Stählin, for whom aesthetic positions were always more important than political ones. He created a collegial meeting place for all those who do not fit neatly into the classical, pop and jazz pigeonholes - analogous to odds and ends that ended up in the unused "sago compartment" of old kitchen buffets. Precision of observation and subtlety of musical expression - this is the focus of the school, which has already hosted celebrities such as Judith Holofernes, Eckart von Hirschhausen, Bodo Wartke and Sebstian Krämer. SAGO offers a unique opportunity to work intensively and creatively together for a week.
You can see this for yourself again on Friday, 20 September at 7.30 pm.
Every year, the graduates are given the task of composing a song on a given theme. The results will be heard in the first part of the concert. In the second part of the concert, the freestyle follows: everyone can show what else they have to offer. The best-known Sago annual task song is probably Judith Holofernes' "Denkmal". The theme of the same name also inspired Bodo Wartke's "Ein Denkmal denkt".
Since Stählin's death in 2015, his long-time assistant Martin Betz and his colleague Matthias Binner have continued to run SAGO. Martin Betz is an author, musician and comedian living in Berlin. In addition to studying historical keyboard instruments, specialising in harpsichord, he has a master's degree in German and musicology. He has received awards including the Esslinger Bahnwärter and Stadtschreiber von Ottendorf. Matthias Binner studied German language and literature and history at the FU Berlin. Even during his studies, he worked professionally as a pianist for well-known theatre, cabaret and show productions. One of his compositions, the operetta "Der Geizhals" - loosely based on Molière - was staged at three German theatres. He has been performing on stage as a singer-songwriter for 18 years and has been a participant in the Sago seminars since 2012. His first solo CD was released in 2015.
