Deep brass - tuba and trombone



The low brass - the base of a balanced orchestral sound. 

The workshop is aimed at instrumentalists from member clubs of the Rhineland-Palatinate State Music Association. 

The instructors coach the participants on the topics of breathing, articulation, embouchure, basics and ensemble playing. 

Teaching team:

Steffen Schmid, born in 1988 in the Southern Palatinate, began his studies in 2007 at the Saar University of Music with Prof. Ralf Rudolph and later moved to Prof. Stefan Heimann and Stefan Ambrosius in Stuttgart, where he completed his bachelor's degree with distinction in 2013. Further studies with Prof. Andreas Hofmeir at the Mozarteum Salzburg rounded off his training.


After a year as a trainee in the Stuttgart Opera Orchestra, Steffen was engaged as a tuba player in the Bavarian State Orchestra for the 2011/12 season.


Temporary work has taken him to renowned orchestras such as the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 2017 and 2019, Steffen was a member of the festival orchestra at the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth. He regularly makes guest appearances with "German Brass" and is a member of the "OperaBrass" ensemble, the brass section of the Bavarian State Opera.


Steffen has played solo concerts with the Kurpfalzphilharmonie Heidelberg, the LandesJugendBlasOrchester Rheinland-Pfalz, the Erzgebirgische Philharmonie Aue and with ATTACCA, the youth orchestra of the Bavarian State Orchestra.


In 2016, he was awarded the scholarship of the German Music Competition.


 


Steffen has taught at the Orchesterzentrum NRW and the Lieksa Brass Week in Finland, among others. After teaching tuba at the Leopold Mozart Center in Augsburg, Steffen has held the same position at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts since 2019.


Prof. Thomas Leyendecker was born in Adenau in 1980. During his school years in Trier, he received his first trombone lessons from Hartmut Karmeier, the bass trombonist at the Trier City Theater. During his school years, Thomas Leyendecker gained his first experience in numerous youth orchestras such as the Rhineland-Palatinate State Youth Orchestra, the Rhineland-Palatinate State Jazz Orchestra, the Federal Youth Orchestra and the Federal Jazz Orchestra under Peter Herbolzheimer, but was also involved in chamber music and instrumental youth training from an early age.


In 1998, he became a junior student with Prof. Henning Wiegräbe at the Saarland University of Music, where he also began his main studies in 2000 after graduating from high school, which he also completed with distinction in 2006 under Prof. Wiegräbe at the Stuttgart University of Music and Theatre. He then went on to study early music with Prof. Charles Toet at the State University of Music Trossingen.


His first temporary engagement with the Duisburger Philharmoniker/Deutsche Oper am Rhein was followed by a scholarship at the Orchestra Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Munich. After his in-depth training there, he took up a position at the Hessisches Staatstheater Darmstadt and shortly afterwards, in October 2005, was engaged by the Berliner Philharmoniker.


Thomas Leyendecker was initially a lecturer at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin and was appointed professor at the Academy of Music in 2012.
