The raga or raag is the basic melodic structure of Indian classical music. It is a “sound personality”, which in turn is assigned to a fixed scale, similar to the Western church modes. Taal or tala, on the other hand, represent the basic ostinato-like rhythmic structure.
The course also deals with stylistic questions, tempo, design and the development of Indian music through the centuries.

Abhirup Roy is a very versatile and highly talented young Tabla virtuoso from Kolkata, India. He belongs to a Gharana (a specific special way of representing the musicology of particular performing style which includes the aesthetics, flavours and the touch of tradition) which is in itself royal by nature and extremely rich in its foundation that is the Benaras Gharana.
He is one of the new genre exponents of the instrument Tabla and is keen on escalating the instrument's popularity along with the traditional style of playing to newer and greater heights.
Roy’s musical journey was started at the age of two and half years from his father who is also the disciple of Pandit Kumar Bose,Sri Swarup Roy. Abhirup’s keen interest in tabla took him to the different doors of various rhythm aspects. When he was 6 years old he was taken by his father to Pandit Kumar Bose for his advanced taalim in tabla. His taalim has been under the strict guidance of his guru and over the years he has learnt the various dynamics and philosophy of the Benaras gharana. Pandit Kumar Bose has developed a distinct style of playing the instrument especially the “Baayan” and Abhirup too has beautifully mastered this particular style of his guru with immense grace. He not only had to earn the compositions but also had to prove himself to play in concerts by his guru. Beside his taalim processes he also assisted Pandit Bose in his different compositions, research and concerts.
He recently received the Global Music Award from California for his composition “The Other Half”. |
